     Kitasoo/Xaixais Nation

Klemtu is a small community on the Central Coast Of BC, Canada. It is home to the Kitasoo/Xaixais Nation with a total population of about 420 people. We have two different nations that live here, the Kitasoo and the Xaixais. The Kitasoo are part of the Tsimshian language family and the Xaixais who are part of the Heiltsuk language family.

Both nations settled here around the 1850s to be closer to the inside passage trade route,  as the steam ships would go through the inside passage they would stop in Klemtu to grab a cord of wood and leave something of value. It wasn't until the early 1900's that Klemtu was established as a reserve.

The name Klemtu has two different meanings; cant get through and a place to tie up. The name "cant get through" was because of a kelp bed that was in the pass a long time ago. It was said to be so thick that one could not get through.
